Objective: To identify prescription’s practices in Emergency Medical Services of large hospital, located
in Belo Horizonte-MG using the calculation of the prescription indicators (Selected Indicators of Drug Use) proposed by WHO and find the prescription’s drugs standarts in this particular unit.
Methods: Observational Research, retrospective, in a quantitative approach. This indicators were
calculated: Average number of drugs per prescription; Percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name;
Percentage of drugs that are listed as standardization of the hospital; Percentage of patients prescribed
antibiotics; Percentage of injectables. 400 prescriptions were analyzed (duplicates) issued to patients in the emergency medical service in February 2010.
Results: There was a total of 1282 drugs prescriptions, representing an average of 3.21 per prescription. In 60.99% of the prescriptions the drugs were prescribed by generic name and the vast majority (98.83%) contained standard drugs. When analyzing the percentage of prescriptions that contained antibiotics and injections, we found values of 13.75% and 85.75% respectively. The most prescribed drugs were sodium chloride 0.9% closed system (8.64%), metoclopramide injection (8.02%), dipyrone injection (7.86%), tenoxicam injection (6.07%) and glucose 50% injectable solution (4.28%).
Conclusion: This study indicate the necessity to improve information for prescribers about the rational use of medicines, as well as educate the nursing staff about the care of the administration of injectable medications, considering the high percentage of prescriptions containing this pharmaceutical form.
